Americans with Disabilities Month
Did you know that Easter Seals was involved in the development of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush on July 26th, 1990? This act guarantees equal opportunity for people with disabilities in public accommodations, commercial facilities, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications.

There are 49.7 million people age 5 and over in the civilian, non-institutionalized population that have at least one disability. Around 10.4 million men and 8.2 million women with disabilities are employed. The number of people ages 16 to 64 who have a condition that affects their ability to work at a job or business is 21.3 million. They account for 11.9 percent of the people in this age group. Veterans with service-related disabilities equal approximately 2.4 million. Of these veterans, 440,000 served in World War II; 165,000 in Korea; 799,000 in Vietnam; and 419,000 in the Persian Gulf.

Eye Injury Prevention Month
More than 2.4 million people suffer from eye injuries each year in the United States. Eye safety is important whether you are inside, outside in the yard or garden, around the car, or at the workplace. A foreign body in the eye is the most common injury, accounting for 30 percent of the total number of eye injuries. Every day an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces. Most eye injuries can be prevented.
